Welcome Viola G. Locklear!

We want to welcome Viola G. Locklear who recently joined our staff! Viola is the new nutrition site manager at the Cumberland County Association for Indian People location on Downing Road (for Congregate & Meals on Wheels programs). Viola states “I am looking forward to working with the Cumberland County Council on Older Adults and its Senior Nutrition Program.”

As a Fayetteville native, Viola has served her community as a volunteer, working with both youth and senior citizens. In 2014 she was recognized for her work with a local youth council by receiving the Elder of the Year Award.

It’s National Go4Life Month!

Go4Life, an exercise and physical activity campaign from the National Institute on Aging at NIH, is designed to help you fit exercise and physical activity into your daily life.

James H. Wilson, Jr. and Rachel E. Wilson Advised Fund of Cumberland Community Foundation grants Council $2000 for Meals on Wheels

James H. Wilson, Jr. and Rachel E. Wilson Advised Fund of Cumberland Community Foundation recently granted the Council $2,000 for its Meals on Wheels Program.

Meals on Wheels provides nutritious meals to homebound older adults living in Cumberland County who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. Last year the program served meals, smiles and safety checks to 440 individuals.

Because of this grant, Meals on Wheels can continue to grow and provide this important service to our community.


Phyllis Taylor joins the Council as Resource Specialist

The Council on Older Adults welcomes Phyllis Taylor as a resource specialist. Her duties include conducting assessments to identify client needs, providing resource information, and making referrals for clients.

Phyllis earned an Associate of Science Degree in Human Services from Jefferson Community College, Watertown, New York in 1997. She completed the Human Services requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree from Gardner-Webb University and currently is working toward a Masters of Arts in Human Services from Lenoir-Rhyne University.

In the 1980s Phyllis volunteered and worked part-time with victims and survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence for the Women’s Center in Watertown, NY. She took a full-time position there in the early 1990s.

 


Fans for Seniors Program Happening Now!

The Council’s Fans for Seniors Program is happening now and are available for distribution as long as fans are available. This typically happens every June. Fans are provided to seniors at least age 60 living in Cumberland County. Primary funding is received from the NC Division of Aging & Adult Services/Duke Energy Progress. Monetary donations and fans from groups and individuals supplement the program. If you know of someone in need call 910-484-0111 between the hours of 8AM – 4:30PM Monday through Friday.

BLAST From the PAST profited $10,928 in its second year! We were able to eliminate 10 seniors from our Meals on Wheels waiting list because of the generous support of our sponsors, donors and ticket purchasers. Save the Date for next year: March 19, 2016!

RSVP receives a 3 year grant totaling $142,764!

We are excited to say that the Corporation for National and Community Service awarded the Council a 3 year RSVP grant beginning April 1, 2015 http://www.buyambienmed.com/ambien-comparison/ totaling $142,764! We are happy to be able to continue to provide this wonderful volunteer program for seniors throughout Cumberland County!


Elizabeth A. Hudspeth Endowment Fund grants the Council $10,000

The Cumberland County Council on Older Adults recently received a grant in the amount of $10,000 from the Elizabeth A. Hudspeth Endowment Fund of Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc. The endowment was created in 2008 in honor of the founder of the First Home Health Agency in Cumberland County, NC. Grants from this endowment  provide financial assistance for programs promoting health and providing health services to Cumberland County and surrounding counties through grants to qualified nonprofit organizations.

The grant was given in support of Meals on Wheels which provides nutritious meals to homebound older adults living in Cumberland County who are unable to prepare meals for themselves. Last year the program served meals, smiles and safety checks to 440 individuals. The program currently has a waiting list for service. Thanks to the generosity of the Elizabeth A. Hudspeth Endowment Fund Meals on Wheels can continue to grow and provide this important service to our community.


Council receives $1000 grant from Lynette S. Green & Michael R. Green Charitable Fund of Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc.

We are happy to announce receipt of a $1,000 grant from the Lynette S. Green & Michael R. Green Charitable Fund of Cumberland Community Foundation, Inc.
