It’s official! Save the Date for Blast From the Past: May 2, 2015! Our volunteer committee and staff have begun asking for sponsorships from local businesses. We are excited!

The funds raised from Blast From the Past will benefit our Meals on Wheels Program. We currently service over 300 seniors per day on average in Cumberland County through our Meals on Wheels Program. Saint Patrick Catholic Church – Christmas in July

How fortunate are we to have wonderful churches in Cumberland County? Saint Patrick Catholic Church’s 55+ Ministry organized a “Christmas in July” event giving the entire parish an opportunity to help those in need. Parishioners selected ornaments from a Christmas tree and donated whatever size gift they desired. Ornaments were designated to different charities in Cumberland County to include our organization, Fayetteville Urban Ministry, Operation Inasmuch, and Catholic Charities.

Saint Patrick Catholic Church’s 55+ Ministry raised $765 for the Council which helped provide funding for our Meals on Wheels Program and assistance with building ramps. “Christmas in July was a major success considering this was the church’s first year organizing”, stated Joyce Hartmann, Co-Leader of 55+ Ministry. Both Joyce Hartmann and Pat Auman (pictured) lead this wonderful group. Thank you to those who selected us as the beneficiary of their blessings!

Willie Wright, Board Chair, receives Order of Long Leaf Pine Award

We want to give a special congratulations to our Board Chair, Mr. Willie Wright. Mr. Wright was one of six local leaders who recently received the statewide service award, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award. A retired Army colonel, Wright now is a counselor and administrator for the Cumberland County School System; and is a graduate of the 2014 United Way of Cumberland County’s Leadership Development Program.

Over the past 30 years Mr. Wright served as a Cumberland County Library volunteer which included serving as chairman of the library’s board of trustees. Cape Fear Regional Theater and the Botanical Gardens are just an additional few of the organizations he has served.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, considered one of the state’s top civilian awards, recently celebrated 50 years. Gov. Terry Sanford from Fayetteville presented the first award to four Spanish dignitaries. Since then such North Carolina notables as Charlie Daniels, Billy Graham, Andy Griffith, Michael Jordan and Richard Petty have been included in the cast of recipients.
