Volunteer

Thank you for inquiring about opportunities to volunteer at the Council. We need volunteers for the following programs:
Senior Nutrition Program
– Director, Amber Gulch
Meals on Wheels: Volunteer 1-2 hours, any day of the week (Monday – Friday) between the hours of 11:00 am-1:00 pm. May volunteer once a day, once a week, or once a month… however you wish to help!
Deliver meals in Cumberland County to home-bound seniors from the following sites:
- Beauty Spot Baptist Church
- Council on Older Adults Office
- Center Baptist Church
- Falling Run Missionary Baptist Church
- VFW Post 10630 of Hope Mills
- Friendship Missionary Baptist Church
- Grays Creek Baptist Church
- Judson Baptist Church
- Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist
- Stedman Baptist Church
- Spring Lake Senior Center
- Simon Temple Church
Congregate Nutrition:
Volunteers also assist at our five congregate sites, where we serve lunch Monday – Friday (Cumberland County Association for Indian People, Falling Run Missionary Baptist, VFW Post 10630 of Hope Mills, Mt Calvary Missionary Baptist, Spring Lake Senior Center). Duties may include helping serve meals, offering activities, and more.
Community Caregiving Circle Program
– Coordinator, Hunter Stewart
Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers must be at least 21 years of age, complete a background check if volunteering as a Senior Companion, and complete required training with the program coordinator.
Telephone Reassurance: No set days or hours required, schedule based on volunteer and client preferences
- Call clients to provide conversation and check on safety and well-being.
Senior Companions: No set days/hours required, but do request regular support of client that is scheduled and based on volunteer and client preferences.
- Visit with the client in their home.
- Transport client to doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, other errands (if desired)
- Help with light housekeeping tasks such as vacuuming, laundry, etc (if desired)
- Provide respite care to give a family caregiver a break
Yard Work/Simple Home Repairs:
- Yard work for seniors (raking leaves, trimming small bushes, pulling weeds, collecting yard debris in bags)
- Minor home repairs if you have a specific skill set.
- Minor home maintenance (changing lightbulbs, moving boxes, etc)
SHIIP- Senior Health Insurance Information Program
– Director, Ellouise Garvin
SHIIP volunteers assist individuals in their community with questions regarding Medicare, Medicare Supplements, Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare prescription drug plans, long term care insurance, etc. Volunteers provide confidential one-on-one counseling, assist in community outreach, and record all interactions.
Requirements to become a volunteer:
- Must complete the 13 hour online training certification.
- Not be or have an immediate family member who is an active insurance salesperson.
